Ways to Fix Garage Door Balance Issues
Overhead garage doors are the biggest moving objects in homes. They are typically safe when operated correctly. Proper installation and regular maintenance is necessary for years of problem-free operation.
After years of regular use, it may become necessary to re-balance the door. Re-balancing the garage door involves checking for proper operation and making the necessary adjustments if the balance is off. This is how to know if your garage door’s balance needs adjustment for safe operation.
1. Release the garage door
Close your garage door and disconnect the opener from the door. Locate the red manual disconnect or release cord hanging from the operator rail. Look along the trolley if you cannot locate it. Pull the red release cord to disengage the door.
2. Pull the garage door up to waist level
After pulling the red release cord and disconnecting the door, attempt to pull the door up to the waist level. If the garage door does not pull up easily, stop and contact a garage door repair expert. After pulling the door to waist level, step back and let it go. The door should stay without falling down or flying back up towards the ceiling. If the door falls down or flies up towards the ceiling, the down force is not set properly and needs adjusting.
3. Push the garage door up to the header
Take the door handle and push it to the top of the header towards the ceiling. Let the door handle go and step back. The garage door should stay at the top and not slide down more than five or six inches.
If your garage door passes both tests, it is properly balanced. If it fails any of the tests, call garage door professionals to re-balance the door. The experts have the tools and knowledge to ensure the door is balanced and working properly. Regular maintenance of the garage door is important to avoid injury to your family and pets.
