Checking for Garage Door loose chains
Garage doors have a lot of moving parts, so if it starts working there could be any number of problems, one possibility is having loose hardware.
Garage door chains can wear over time and stretch. When this happens your garage door will no longer be able to lift up properly, either not moving at all, or not raising to the proper height. Knowing that this is the problem will give you a leg up when it comes time to get your garage door repaired.
Unplug the garage door opener
First, before you get up on a ladder and start poking around, make sure to unplug your garage door opener from any outlets. As with any machines, garage door openers can be dangerous if not handled properly.
To check and see if the garage door chain is lose you need to look over the along the length of the chain looking for looseness. While the main key would be sagging or dropping in your garage door chain, it could be a subtle looseness that might not be readily apparent. Feel along the chain, it should maintain a fairly even tightness.
Check garage door chain connection
If this part seems fine, you can also check the connection of the chain to the rail. The garage door chain is usually connected to the rail close in to the main garage door mechanism, usually on a metal latch of hook. Check the inner and outer nuts to ensure they are both securely fastened to the rail. Either of these being loose, or if one of them has fallen out entirely, could be the cause for your garage door issues.
